It is interesting that God declared that clean beasts should be preserved by three pairs plus one and unclean beasts by a single pair. This was because God wished to preserve man. Three pairs of sheep could breed and be eaten by man for food. The seventh lamb could be used for the institution of the sacrifice to God. The unclean beasts had only one pair preserved. This made the number of lions and wild beasts smaller in number overall so as to keep the number of that kind smaller in number. It would not have been good to have herds of lion around.
